What is professional tax?

A state tax on employment that employers deduct from pay.

Professional tax is levied by state governments, not the central government. Not every state charges it.

Rates and slabs depend on the state and on monthly pay. The most a person can be charged in a year is limited by the Constitution.

Employers deduct it from salary and deposit it. Due dates and returns follow each state's rules.

Dates and rules change. Check the current notification or ask your adviser before relying on this page.
