What is PF (Provident Fund)?

Employees' Provident Fund in plain words.

PF is a retirement savings scheme run under the Employees' Provident Funds law. Both the employee and the employer pay into it every month.

The usual contribution is 12% of basic pay (plus dearness allowance) from each side. Many employers calculate it on a wage limit of INR 15,000 a month, and some pay on full basic.

Payment and the monthly return are due by the 15th of the following month.

PF applies to establishments above the threshold set by law, and some smaller ones opt in. Check whether it applies to you.

Dates and rules change. Check the current notification or ask your adviser before relying on this page.
